How much does timeshare cost? Well, how long is a piece of string?!
The cost of a timeshare depends on a wide range of factors.
Firstly, there’s the matter of the size and quality of the timeshare unit itself, and the quality of the resort. Like any hotel or holiday resort you stay in, the higher the star rating, the better the quality of the rooms, facilities, and (usually) the service you receive whilst staying there.
The price of resorts is also dependent on destination. Depending on the strength of the country’s currency, the desirability of the destination, and so on, the price will differ considerably.
The cost of any timeshare week you purchase will be different depending on the popularity of that week. High season, usually during the school holidays and when the weather at the destination is at its finest, commands a higher price, whereas a spot mid-term time or in the colder months is less desirable and will therefore cost you less.
Often, there are optional add-ons that increase the price of a timeshare membership. Signing up to an exchange programme, or adding other units to your timeshare ‘portfolio’ will add to the price you pay for your timeshare.
Don’t forget that it isn’t just the upfront cost that you pay for the timeshare. You will also have to budget for the annual maintenance fees chargeable to all members in order to run and maintain the resort. These can increase considerably from year to year, often climaxing in a crisis point where the membership is no longer affordable, but very sticky to get out of.
Many people, however, continue to find the price that they pay for their timeshare to be quite reasonable considering the benefits they get from it. The stability and bonuses for members can be very appealing to some holidaymakers. On the other hand, it’s important to note that it is usually much less expensive over time to refrain from joining any holiday membership system and, instead, to book your holidays freely each year. What’s more, you will not be bound in to holiday on a certain week or at a certain destination every year, for a period that may be up to 50 years in duration.
